Real In the Field Certificate Program
Are you a new manager? Have you been managing employees but feel like you still struggle to effectively address performance issues? Can you differentiate between what is a simple issue that you can address versus something that requires the help of HR or a legal professional? Do you wonder if there’s a more effective way to address employee misconduct?  If your answer to any of the above questions is yes, this series is for you!

We have developed a comprehensive set of classes that will help new and existing managers examine what it means to be a manager and learn how to navigate common personnel issues. Through this series of courses, you can learn to become a more effective manager in today’s complex business environment. Classes consist of a mix of lecture and hands-on learning. After learning the principles of management, you will get an opportunity to immediately tackle common employment problems and practice your approach to managing others in a supportive learning environment. By hearing, seeing and doing, you can learn to be a more confident, effective manager of personnel.

The certificate program consists of three, 3-hour sessions. Complete all three classes to receive the Butte College Real in the Field Management Certificate.

Real in the Field Section 1: (3 hours) Basic Management Principles: Examine what it means to be a manager of people and identify the characteristics of a good manager. Learn how to avoid the bad habits and traits of ineffective managers and hone your skills to confidently provide timely, relevant performance feedback. Practice handling common workplace disputes such as issues over stolen lunches, strong odors in the workplace, conflicting vacation requests, workers who do “just enough” to get by and how to manage a transition from co-worker to supervisor.

Real in the Field Section 2: (3 hours) Managing Common Workplace Scenarios:  Learn how to manage common managerial issues, such as chronic absenteeism, scheduling conflicts, managing non-exempt employees and paying workers properly, as well as more in-depth employee disputes such as poor teamwork, co-worker sabotage/divisiveness, accountability conflicts and the dreaded termination meeting. Practice handling these common scenarios and learn from fellow attendees as they tackle common scenarios.

Real in the Field Section 3: (3 hours) Advanced Management Principles: California and federal laws regarding family and medical leaves have become increasingly complex. Learn the basic types of employee leaves of absence, including hen you are required to notify employees of their rights.  Understand how to manage and document pregnancy, medical and other leaves of absence, and when/how to engage in the interactive process for employees with disabilities.
